Movisie supports and advises 40 Dutch municipalities in developing and implementing local policies inclusive to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) citizens.
The Dutch minister of Education, Science and Culture signed a memorandum of understanding with the aldermen of these municipalities. The goal of the programme is to secure attention for LGBT citizens in mainstream local policies. Social acceptance and Safety are priorities designated by the government. The programme runs between 2012 and 2014.
The Dutch municipalities are encouraged to work closely together with local partner organisations and NGO’s when it come to executing the policies. Moreover, municipalities are involving their own policy departments and service providers. Ideally, empowerment of LGBT citizens within their city is tackled, next to promoting a positive general attitude towards LGBT people. These themes should be secured in general local policies long-term.
Movisie hereby presents an overview of Dutch local LGBT policies, drawn up in collaboration with the policy makers of the 40 Dutch municipalities. In one page each municipality presents itself, their focus and their priorities with regard to LGBT issues for the period 2012 - 2014. This document also provides an insight in to what extent the municipality takes responsibility for execution and securing of LGBT policies. Some municipalities have chosen to fully, or for a large part, outsource this task to local interest groups, anti-discrimination agencies and NGO’s.
